Detty December has returned, and in addition to the festivals, concerts, and beach parties, Nollywood is releasing a new batch of movies to brighten Nigerian theatres.
Filmmakers are capitalising on the festive spirit with narratives intended to attract audiences seeking Christmas entertainment, from exuberant comedies to suspenseful dramas and star-studded blockbusters.
This December, there are a couple of Nollywood movies that will be showing at the cinemas. There has been a rollercoaster of publicity, media hypes and trailer rushes, and they promise to be exciting as the season itself.
Behind the Scenes
Produced and co-directed by Funke Akindele under her production banner (FAAN), the film explores the hidden pressures behind success and public life — a dramatic, relatable story for the holiday season. A meta-styled drama-comedy that exposes the hustling, confusion, egos, and humour of the Nollywood film industry, it creates a lighthearted yet perceptive experience by fusing fictional storytelling with real-life industry satire.
King of Boys 3: The Beginning of the End
This highly anticipated sequel continues the saga of power, ambition, and underworld politics that made the earlier films in the franchise major hits. Produced by Kemi Adetiba, the movie will hinge on political intrigue, revenge arcs, and emotional stakes that rise higher than ever, setting the stage for a defining conclusion.
Colours of Fire
Set for release on December 24, the film promises a festive story of love, loss, and resilience – backed by top production standards and a star-studded cast.
This is Not a Nollywood Movie
An experimental project that breaks the fourth wall and plays with narrative structure. By fusing fiction with documentary-style commentary, it subverts Nollywood norms and tells a gripping tale while making fun of clichés.
A Very Dirty Christmas
Produced by Minini Empire, A Very Dirty Christmas is a festive comedy full of miscommunication, family strife, upheaval, and the usual December lunacy. It is a popular option for those who enjoy holiday movies because it tends toward humour, romance and festive energy.
